App terms of service
Last updated 2 October 2026
Draft. These terms apply to the Riar app once it launches. Joining the waitlist is free and creates no contract. Items [marked like this] are confirmed before launch.
1. Who these terms are with, and acceptance
These terms are a contract between you and Riar, for your use of the Riar mobile app and riar.ie website ("the Service"). Riar is run by H. Ameh, Lyster Square, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, R32 CV97.
By creating an account, you accept these terms. If you don't agree with them, don't use the Service.
Riar is for people aged 16 and over. By creating an account, you confirm you meet this age requirement.
2. The service
Riar helps you track deadlines, renewals, bills and household admin by connecting your email, letting you forward or photograph documents, and reminding you before things are due.
What Riar is not:
- Not financial, legal or insurance advice. Where Riar shows a comparison prompt for a renewal (for example, an insurance or mortgage rate ending), this is a plain, unpaid link to a public comparison resource, for information only. We have no commercial relationship with these sites, we don't earn commission from them, and nothing we show should be read as a recommendation or regulated financial advice.
- Not a substitute for checking the official source. We link to the official source for every item we extract, and you should verify anything time-sensitive or financially significant directly with the relevant provider or authority before acting on it.
- Not a guarantee against missed deadlines. Riar is a tool to reduce the chance of missing something, not a warranty that you never will. See Section 11 on liability.
3. Accounts and sign-in
You can sign up with Apple, Google, Microsoft, a phone number, or an email link, and set up a passkey afterwards. You're responsible for keeping your sign-in method secure, and for anything that happens under your account as a result of you not doing so.
If you lose access to your sign-in method, use the account recovery flow in the app. Email support@riar.ie if you're unable to recover access any other way.
4. Subscriptions, pricing and billing
Riar has three tiers: Free, Plus, and Household. Plus and Household are paid subscriptions, billed in advance on a recurring basis through the App Store or Google Play, at the price shown at the time you subscribe.
- Billing and payment are handled by Apple or Google, under their own terms. We don't see or store your card details.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. Cancel any time through your App Store or Google Play account settings; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
- If we change subscription pricing, we'll give you notice before it applies to your next renewal, and you can cancel before then if you don't want the new price.
- Riar does not charge switching commissions or take a cut from any third party for renewal referrals. Subscriptions are the only way we make money from you.
5. Your right to cancel
Plus and Household subscriptions are sold to you by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play), which take your payment and handle cancellations and refunds under their own terms. That includes your right, as a consumer in the EU, to withdraw from a new subscription within 14 days.
To use that right or ask for a refund, go to Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com) or Google (your Google Play account), depending on where you subscribed. Riar can't issue refunds for App Store or Google Play purchases itself. If you have trouble, email support@riar.ie and we'll help.
[Solicitor to confirm: how the Consumer Rights Act 2022 right of withdrawal applies when Apple or Google is the seller, and whether Riar should commit to anything further for Google Play purchases.]
After any withdrawal period, the ordinary subscription cancellation terms in Section 4 apply.
6. Household sharing
A Household lets up to 6 people share items with each other. Each item stays private by default; sharing it is a choice you make per item or category. Each shared item has one owner, who gets its reminders; another member can take it over, and the owner is told.
You can leave a household at any time, instantly, without needing anyone else's approval. This is deliberate, so nobody is stuck sharing their data with someone they no longer want to. Leaving removes your access to items others have shared with you, and removes their access to yours.
We don't mediate disputes between household members about shared items. That's between you and them.
7. Acceptable use
Don't use Riar to:
- access or add data about someone who hasn't given you a lawful basis to hold it (for example, a dependant profile for a child who isn't in your care, or a "managing for" profile without the other adult's recorded consent)
- attempt to interfere with, reverse-engineer, or gain unauthorised access to the Service
- use the Service for anything unlawful, or to harass or harm another person
We can suspend or close an account that breaches this section. See Section 10.
8. Your content, our content
You own the data you put into Riar: your emails, photos, notes and everything else. You grant us a licence to process it solely to provide the Service to you, as described in our Privacy Policy. We claim no ownership over your content, and we don't use it to train AI models or for any purpose beyond running the Service for you.
The Riar app, its design, and its underlying software belong to us, and this agreement doesn't transfer any of that to you.
9. Third-party links and services
Riar links to comparison sites (Bonkers.ie, Switcher.ie, Chill.ie, Mortgages.ie, and hia.ie, the Health Insurance Authority, for health insurance). These are separate organisations we don't control.
We don't endorse them, we're not responsible for their content, pricing, or availability, and using them is subject to their own terms. As set out in our Privacy Policy, the comparison links carry no commercial relationship or tracking of any kind.
10. Availability, changes and termination
We target 99.5% monthly availability during beta, but we don't guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free. Things break, and we fix them as fast as we can.
We may change or discontinue features over time. If we discontinue the Service entirely, we'll give you reasonable notice and a chance to export your data first.
You can delete your account at any time. We can suspend or close an account that breaches Section 7 (Acceptable use), and we'll tell you why unless we're legally prevented from doing so.
11. Liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability that can't lawfully be limited or excluded under Irish or EU consumer law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or breach of the statutory guarantees on digital services under the Consumer Rights Act 2022. Those rights stand regardless of anything else in this section.
Within what the law does allow us to limit: Riar is a reminder tool, not a guarantee. We're not liable for losses arising from a missed deadline, an inaccurate extraction, or a third-party service (including the comparison sites) being wrong, unavailable, or unsuitable for your circumstances, provided we've met our own obligations under these terms and the Consumer Rights Act 2022. Where we are liable, our liability for a paid subscription is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.
12. Complaints and dispute resolution
If something's gone wrong, contact us first at the details in Section 14. Most things are fixable directly.
If we can't resolve it between us, you can raise it with Ireland's Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), or use the Small Claims Procedure through the Irish courts for claims up to €2,000. The EU's Online Dispute Resolution platform, which older terms of service often reference, was permanently discontinued on 20 July 2025 and no longer exists, so it isn't a route available to you.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the Service changes. We'll tell you directly in the app before a material change takes effect, and continuing to use Riar after that point means you accept the update. If you don't agree with a change, you can cancel before it takes effect.
14. Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by the law of Ireland. If you're a consumer, this doesn't take away any protection you'd otherwise have under the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live.
Contact us at legal@riar.ie for anything relating to these terms. For help using Riar, including account recovery and subscriptions, email support@riar.ie.
